Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Fighters Group
From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with rich lore, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, demons, and dark forces expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
Episode 3 concluded with a dramatic pause and presented the first table of heroes who will separate from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, separate from the remaining groups.
The combat-focused team consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie).
Dividing the Cast
Considering a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.
That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.
The Nature of the Soldiers Table
According to the DM, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.
Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander might seem unsuited, but the developments of the third episode show why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the warrior group.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise initiated the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, attacking the character, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.
Casimir then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a fortified location in the remote area, beyond Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:
- The rogue, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants retribution.
- The knowledgeable figure knows the northern area and warns that it is a nasty place.
- The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have no other options.
- However, their position as key figures in House Halovar could help the group enter areas they normally couldn’t.
- Moreover, Teor swore a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally no longer safe:
- Thimble and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- The warrior and The cleric turned against the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are allied with.
- The target is targeted for elimination by the family.
This means them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in quest for Casimir.
Upcoming Developments
Based on episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the combat party will be absent next week, leaving the other eight players to round up the Explorers and Schemers tables.
Viewers can anticipate discovering which players will be where in Campaign 4’s last Overture episode, released on next week.
