Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor
In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
